How to crack the Group Discussion(GD) – Campus To Corporate

Group discussion is a part of recruitment process and the next step towards Campus to Corporate ,more than selection it is considered as an elimination criteria. Often used by the recruiter where the number of candidates are high. Remember it is not a debate, where you need to prove you point ,where either you win or lose but expressing your point of view and respecting another’s point of view. It is a process where recruiter is trying to gauge upon various skill set like, leadership skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills, listening skills, adaptability, reasoning skills, team spirit, time management, assertiveness, knowledge, convincing capacity, self confidence, diplomacy , rationality, empathy, attitude, presence of mind, respect for others and so on.

All candidates are placed on an equal footing in a GD. It is also designed as a situation test wherein a candidate’s group worthiness and potential as employee comes out explicitly.

  4. Group discussions were always scary for me since often people tend to get into attack mode with anyone who doesn’t agree with their point of view. Good pointers, Swati. Content and contribution are very important.

  5. This post took me to my days of giving interviews and participating in GDs. You should know and prepare yourself to clear GD as it is a very important step to get a job. You have described it really well. My mantra was be in first 2-3 sentences then summarize in between and then end it. It worked for me.

  6. A very insightful post Swati. You reminded me of my Group discussion when I sat for MNC interview. I cracked the round. You won’t believe i wasn’t clear about the topic which was “Endorsements by celebrities” and I didn’t know what is meant by endorsement. But luckily I wasn’t first to speak about it and I waited for my turn patiently while listening others views. And I was among the 2 who got selected out of 2. Saving it for my kid.

  7. This is an interesting post. I wish I read it some years ago. I still remember the first GD I cleared. I didn’t really care about the getting that job. Probably that attitude made me look like not very needy and I just sent across my points a few times. Somehow I got selected! I’d say miracle do happen when you least expect it 😉
